Excel FILTER function
Returns only the rows that meet a condition; the result spills and updates by itself. In Spanish Excel it is called FILTRAR.
Syntax
English Excel
=FILTER(array, include, [if_empty])
Spanish Excel (Mexico)
=FILTRAR(matriz, incluir, [si_está_vacío])
Spanish Excel (Spain, Latin America)
=FILTRAR(matriz; incluir; [si_está_vacío])
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| array | The range to filter. |
| include | The per-row condition, such as B2:B100="North". |
| if_emptyoptional | What to show when nothing matches. |
Example
FILTER(range, condition) returns only the rows that meet the condition. The condition compares a whole column with a value, like B2:B11=F1, and is checked row by row.
=FILTER(A2:C11,B2:B11=F1)
Common mistake
For several conditions do not use AND: multiply them, (B2:B100="North")*(C2:C100>5000). With no matches and no third argument it returns #CALC!.

Frequently asked questions
- What is FILTER called in Spanish?

- Why does FILTER use semicolons in some Excel versions?
- It depends on regional settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), Excel separates arguments with semicolons. English Excel and Mexican Spanish Excel use commas.
- What is the most common FILTER mistake?
- For several conditions do not use AND: multiply them, (B2:B100="North")*(C2:C100>5000). With no matches and no third argument it returns #CALC!.
