Excel ISERROR function
Returns TRUE when the value is any error. In Spanish Excel it is called ESERROR.
Syntax
English Excel
=ISERROR(value)
Spanish Excel (Mexico)
=ESERROR(valor)
Spanish Excel (Spain, Latin America)
=ESERROR(valor)
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| value | The value or formula to check. |
Example
MATCH returns #N/A when it cannot find a value. ISNA detects exactly that error, so IF(ISNA(MATCH(…)), …) tells you whether something is missing from another list. ISERROR catches any error.
=IF(ISNA(MATCH(A2,$D$2:$D$5,0)),"Missing","Registered")
Common mistake
If you only want to replace the error with another value, IFERROR is shorter.

Frequently asked questions
- What is ISERROR called in Spanish?
- In Spanish Excel it is ESERROR. The formula =IF(ISNA(MATCH(A2,$D$2:$D$5,0)),"Missing","Registered") is written =SI(ESNOD(COINCIDIR(A2;$D$2:$D$5;0));"Falta";"Registrado") (or with commas in Mexico).
- Why does ISERROR use semicolons in some Excel versions?
- It depends on regional settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), Excel separates arguments with semicolons. English Excel and Mexican Spanish Excel use commas.
- What is the most common ISERROR mistake?
- If you only want to replace the error with another value, IFERROR is shorter.
