Excel WEEKDAY function

Returns the day of the week of a date as a number. In Spanish Excel it is called DIASEM.

Syntax

English Excel

=WEEKDAY(serial_number, [return_type])

Spanish Excel (Mexico)

=DIASEM(núm_de_serie, [tipo])

Spanish Excel (Spain, Latin America)

=DIASEM(núm_de_serie; [tipo])

ArgumentWhat it is
serial_numberThe date.
return_typeoptional1 (default): Sunday = 1; 2: Monday = 1 and Sunday = 7.

Example

WEEKDAY(date, 2) returns the day of the week from 1 (Monday) to 7 (Sunday), so a value above 5 is a weekend.

=IF(WEEKDAY(A2,2)>5,"Weekend","Weekday")

Common mistake

Without the second argument the week starts on Sunday; with 2 it starts on Monday, which is usually clearer.

Frequently asked questions

What is WEEKDAY called in Spanish?
In Spanish Excel it is DIASEM. The formula =IF(WEEKDAY(A2,2)>5,"Weekend","Weekday") is written =SI(DIASEM(A2;2)>5;"Fin de semana";"Hábil") (or with commas in Mexico).
Why does WEEKDAY use semicolons in some Excel versions?
It depends on regional settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), Excel separates arguments with semicolons. English Excel and Mexican Spanish Excel use commas.
What is the most common WEEKDAY mistake?
Without the second argument the week starts on Sunday; with 2 it starts on Monday, which is usually clearer.
