Free Online Excel Formula Explainer
When you inherit a workbook or copy a formula from a forum, figuring out what it does can take longer than rewriting it. Paste it here and see it taken apart: every function with what it does, every argument with its name, and every cell or range with what happens when you copy it. Common mistakes are checked at the same time, and if the cell shows #N/A, #VALUE! or another error, you get where it usually comes from and how to fix it. You do not need to upload your file: everything runs in your browser.

Questions about Excel Formula Explainer
Why does my VLOOKUP return the wrong value without an error?
Almost always the fourth argument is missing. Without FALSE (or 0), VLOOKUP does an approximate match: if it cannot find the exact value it returns the closest previous row instead of #N/A. The explainer flags it as a warning.
What does the $ sign mean in a formula?
It anchors the reference when copying. $A$2 never changes, A$2 keeps the row and $A2 keeps the column. In the breakdown of your formula you will see, for each cell, what happens when you copy it.
Do I need to upload my Excel file?
No. You only paste the formula text and everything is analyzed in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
Can it tell me the formula's result?
Without your sheet's data the result cannot be calculated, but it can explain what the formula does and find common typing and logic mistakes. To practice with sample data, use the Excel exercises.
