Excel PV function
Calculates what a series of future payments is worth today: how much you can borrow with the payment you can afford. In Spanish Excel it is called VA.
Syntax
English Excel
=PV(rate, nper, pmt, [fv], [type])
Spanish Excel (Mexico)
=VA(tasa, nper, pago, [vf], [tipo])
Spanish Excel (Spain, Latin America)
=VA(tasa; nper; pago; [vf]; [tipo])
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| rate | The rate per period. |
| nper | The number of payments. |
| pmt | The payment each period (negative). |
| fvoptional | Balance at the end; 0 by default. |
| typeoptional | 0: payment at the end; 1: at the start. |
Example
PV(rate, periods, payment) works it out backwards: given the payment you can afford, how much you can borrow today.
=PV(B2/12,B3*12,-B1)
Common mistake
Use the same time unit for rate and periods (monthly with monthly).

Frequently asked questions
- What is PV called in Spanish?

- Why does PV use semicolons in some Excel versions?
- It depends on regional settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), Excel separates arguments with semicolons. English Excel and Mexican Spanish Excel use commas.
