Excel RATE function
Calculates the interest rate per period of a loan or an installment purchase. In Spanish Excel it is called TASA.
Syntax
English Excel
=RATE(nper, pmt, pv, [fv])
Spanish Excel (Mexico)
=TASA(núm_per, pago, va, [vf])
Spanish Excel (Spain, Latin America)
=TASA(núm_per; pago; va; [vf])
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| nper | The number of payments. |
| pmt | The payment each period (negative). |
| pv | The amount received today. |
| fvoptional | Balance at the end. |
Example
"12 payments of 1,150" sounds fine, but what interest are you paying? RATE(periods, payment, amount) returns the rate per period. Multiply it by 12 for the annual rate.
=RATE(B2,-B3,B1)
Common mistake
It returns the rate per period: with monthly payments, multiply by 12 for the annual rate. Payment and amount must have opposite signs.
