Google Sheets FIND function
Returns the position where a text appears inside another. In Spanish Sheets it is called ENCONTRAR.
Syntax
English Sheets
=FIND(search_for, text_to_search, [starting_at])
Spanish Sheets (Mexico locale)
=ENCONTRAR(cadena_búsqueda, texto_para_buscar, [carácter_inicio])
Spanish Sheets (Spain, Latin America)
=ENCONTRAR(cadena_búsqueda; texto_para_buscar; [carácter_inicio])
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| search_for | What you look for. |
| text_to_search | Where to look. |
| starting_atoptional | From which position; 1 by default. |
Example
SEARCH is like FIND, but it ignores case. Use it when you do not know how the text is written.
=MID(A2,SEARCH("@",A2)+1,100)
Common mistake
It is case-sensitive; if not found it returns #VALUE!. SEARCH does the same ignoring case.

Frequently asked questions
- What is FIND called in Spanish?
- In Spanish Google Sheets it is ENCONTRAR. The formula =MID(A2,SEARCH("@",A2)+1,100) is written =EXTRAE(A2;HALLAR("@";A2)+1;100) (or with commas under a Mexico locale).
- Why does FIND use semicolons in some spreadsheets?
- It depends on each spreadsheet's locale, under File > Settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), arguments are separated by semicolons. Mexico and United States locales use commas.
- What is the most common FIND mistake?
- It is case-sensitive; if not found it returns #VALUE!. SEARCH does the same ignoring case.
