Google Sheets functions in English and Spanish
Each function has its syntax in both languages, its most common mistake and an exercise to practice it in an interactive sheet. If your spreadsheet shows functions in another language, the table at the end tells you what each one is called. Start with the lessons
Basics
- SUMSUMAAdds numbers, cells and ranges. It is the most used function in Sheets.
- AVERAGEPROMEDIOCalculates the arithmetic mean: adds the numbers and divides by how many there are. Skips blank cells and text.
- MINReturns the smallest number in a range.
- MAXReturns the largest number in a range.
- COUNTCONTARCounts how many cells contain numbers.
- COUNTACONTARACounts the cells that are not empty, whether they hold numbers or text.
Percentages and rounding
Logic
- IFSIReturns one value or another depending on a condition.
- IFSSI.CONJUNTOChecks several conditions in order and returns the value of the first one that holds, without nesting IFs.
- ANDYReturns TRUE only when every condition holds.
- OROReturns TRUE when at least one condition holds.
- IFERRORSI.ERRORReturns a formula’s result or, if it errors, the value you choose.
Conditional counts and sums
Multiple conditions
- COUNTIFSCONTAR.SI.CONJUNTOCounts the rows that meet every condition at once.
- SUMIFSSUMAR.SI.CONJUNTOAdds the rows that meet every condition.
- AVERAGEIFSPROMEDIO.SI.CONJUNTOAverages the rows that meet every condition.
- MAXIFSMAX.SI.CONJUNTOReturns the highest value among the rows that meet the conditions.
- MINIFSMIN.SI.CONJUNTOReturns the lowest value among the rows that meet the conditions.
- SUMPRODUCTSUMAPRODUCTOMultiplies the ranges row by row and adds up the results.
Lookup
- VLOOKUPBUSCARVLooks up a value in a table’s first column and returns data from another column on that row.
- INDEXINDICEReturns the value at a position in a range. With MATCH it makes a lookup in any direction.
- MATCHCOINCIDIRReturns the position of a value within a row or column.
- XLOOKUPSearches one column and returns the value from another, in any direction and with an exact match by default.
Text
- LEFTIZQUIERDAReturns the first characters of a text.
- RIGHTDERECHAReturns the last characters of a text.
- MIDEXTRAEReturns characters from the middle of a text, starting at a position.
- PROPERNOMPROPIOCapitalizes the first letter of each word and lowercases the rest.
- LOWERMINUSCConverts text to lowercase. Its opposite is UPPER.
- LENLARGOCounts the characters in a text, spaces included.
- TRIMESPACIOSRemoves leading and trailing spaces and leaves a single space between words.
- TEXTJOINUNIRCADENASJoins a range into one text with the separator you choose.
- SPLITSplits a text and spreads the pieces into the cells to the right. It is a Sheets-only function.
- REGEXMATCHReturns TRUE when a text matches a regular expression. It is a Sheets-only function.
Dates
- YEARAÑOReturns the year of a date.
- MONTHMESReturns the month number of a date, from 1 to 12.
- DATEDIFSIFECHACalculates full years, months or days between two dates. Useful for ages and tenure.

- EOMONTHFIN.MESReturns the last day of the month, shifted by the months you give.
- WEEKDAYReturns a date’s day of the week as a number.
Array formulas
- ARRAYFORMULALets one formula work on whole ranges and fill an entire column. It is a Sheets-only function.
- FILTERReturns only the rows that meet the conditions and spills them downward.
- UNIQUEReturns the list without duplicates, in the order they appear.
- SORTReturns a sorted copy of a range without touching the original data.

Functions that started in Sheets, such as FILTER, ARRAYFORMULA, SPLIT or XLOOKUP, keep their English names. The argument separator depends on the spreadsheet's locale (File > Settings): semicolons (;) in Spain and much of Latin America, commas (,) in Mexico and the United States.
