Google Sheets SPLIT function
Splits a text and spreads the pieces into the cells to the right. It is a Sheets-only function. It has the same name in Spanish Sheets.
Syntax
English Sheets
=SPLIT(text, delimiter, [split_by_each], [remove_empty_text])
Spanish Sheets (Mexico locale)
=SPLIT(texto, delimitador, [dividir_por_carácter], [quitar_texto_vacío])
Spanish Sheets (Spain, Latin America)
=SPLIT(texto; delimitador; [dividir_por_carácter]; [quitar_texto_vacío])
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| text | The text to divide. |
| delimiter | Where to cut, for example "@" or ",". |
| split_by_eachoptional | TRUE (default) cuts at each character of the delimiter; FALSE uses the whole delimiter. |
| remove_empty_textoptional | TRUE (default) drops empty pieces. |
Example
SPLIT(text, delimiter) cuts a text and spreads the pieces into the cells to the right: the formula "spills". It is a Sheets function with the same name in Spanish. If a destination cell holds data, it returns #REF!.
=SPLIT(A2,"@")
Common mistake
With ", " as the delimiter and no FALSE, it cuts at every comma and every space. If the cells to the right hold data, it returns #REF!.

Frequently asked questions
- What is SPLIT called in Spanish?
- It has the same name: SPLIT. Functions that started in Google Sheets keep their English name even in a Spanish spreadsheet. What changes is the separator: Spain and much of Latin America separate arguments with semicolons.
- Why does SPLIT use semicolons in some spreadsheets?
- It depends on each spreadsheet's locale, under File > Settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), arguments are separated by semicolons. Mexico and United States locales use commas.
- What is the most common SPLIT mistake?
- With ", " as the delimiter and no FALSE, it cuts at every comma and every space. If the cells to the right hold data, it returns #REF!.
