Excel DATE function

Builds a date from the year, month and day. In Spanish Excel it is called FECHA.

Syntax

English Excel

=DATE(year, month, day)

Spanish Excel (Mexico)

=FECHA(año, mes, día)

Spanish Excel (Spain, Latin America)

=FECHA(año; mes; día)

ArgumentWhat it is
yearThe year, four digits.
monthThe month; 13 rolls over to next January.
dayThe day.

Example

DATE(year, month, day) builds a date from its parts. A month of 13 rolls over to the next January, so it also adds months or years.

Common mistake

Combine it with LEFT, MID and RIGHT to rescue dates imported as text.

Frequently asked questions

What is DATE called in Spanish?
In Spanish Excel it is FECHA. The formula =DATE(A2,B2,C2) is written =FECHA(A2;B2;C2) (or with commas in Mexico).
Why does DATE use semicolons in some Excel versions?
It depends on regional settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), Excel separates arguments with semicolons. English Excel and Mexican Spanish Excel use commas.
What is the most common DATE mistake?
Combine it with LEFT, MID and RIGHT to rescue dates imported as text.
