Excel DAY function
Returns the day of the month of a date, from 1 to 31. In Spanish Excel it is called DIA.
Syntax
English Excel
=DAY(serial_number)
Spanish Excel (Mexico)
=DIA(núm_de_serie)
Spanish Excel (Spain, Latin America)
=DIA(núm_de_serie)
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| serial_number | The date. |
Example
When a date arrives as text ("15/03/2026"), Excel cannot subtract or sort it. Rescue it with DATE: the year is the last 4 characters, the month the middle ones and the day the first 2.
=DAY(B2)
Common mistake
If it returns #VALUE!, the "date" is probably text. Convert it with DATE or DATEVALUE.

Dates imported as text
When a date arrives as text ("15/03/2026"), Excel cannot subtract or sort it. Rescue it with DATE: the year is the last 4 characters, the month the middle ones and the day the first 2.
In B2, turn the text (day/month/year) into a real date.
