Google Sheets AVERAGE function
Calculates the arithmetic mean: adds the numbers and divides by how many there are. Skips blank cells and text. In Spanish Sheets it is called PROMEDIO.
Syntax
English Sheets
=AVERAGE(value1, [value2], …)
Spanish Sheets (Mexico locale)
=PROMEDIO(valor1, [valor2], …)
Spanish Sheets (Spain, Latin America)
=PROMEDIO(valor1; [valor2]; …)
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| value1 | The first number or range. |
| value2optional | More numbers or ranges. |
Example
AVERAGE adds the numbers in a range and divides by how many there are; blank cells do not count as 0. MAX returns the largest and MIN the smallest, and they keep their names in Spanish.
=AVERAGE(B2:B7)
Common mistake
A blank cell does not count but a 0 does: typing 0 instead of leaving it blank lowers the average.

Frequently asked questions
- What is AVERAGE called in Spanish?
- In Spanish Google Sheets it is PROMEDIO. The formula =AVERAGE(B2:B7) is written =PROMEDIO(B2:B7) (or with commas under a Mexico locale).
- Why does AVERAGE use semicolons in some spreadsheets?
- It depends on each spreadsheet's locale, under File > Settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), arguments are separated by semicolons. Mexico and United States locales use commas.
- What is the most common AVERAGE mistake?
