Google Sheets MOD function

Returns the remainder of a division. In Spanish Sheets it is called RESIDUO.

Syntax

English Sheets

=MOD(dividend, divisor)

Spanish Sheets (Mexico locale)

=RESIDUO(dividendo, divisor)

Spanish Sheets (Spain, Latin America)

=RESIDUO(dividendo; divisor)

ArgumentWhat it is
dividendThe number to divide.
divisorWhat to divide by.

Example

INT drops the decimals, rounding down, and MOD(dividend, divisor) gives the remainder of a division. Together they turn minutes into hours and minutes, or pieces into packs and leftovers.

=MOD(B2,60)

Common mistake

MOD(n,2)=0 tells whether n is even: handy for alternating rows or shifts. Dividing by 0 gives #DIV/0!.

Frequently asked questions

What is MOD called in Spanish?
In Spanish Google Sheets it is RESIDUO. The formula =MOD(B2,60) is written =RESIDUO(B2;60) (or with commas under a Mexico locale).
Why does MOD use semicolons in some spreadsheets?
It depends on each spreadsheet's locale, under File > Settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), arguments are separated by semicolons. Mexico and United States locales use commas.
What is the most common MOD mistake?
MOD(n,2)=0 tells whether n is even: handy for alternating rows or shifts. Dividing by 0 gives #DIV/0!.
