Google Sheets SEQUENCE function
Generates a list of consecutive numbers that spills downward. In Spanish Sheets it is called SECUENCIA.
Syntax
English Sheets
=SEQUENCE(rows, [columns], [start], [step])
Spanish Sheets (Mexico locale)
=SECUENCIA(filas, [columnas], [inicio], [incremento])
Spanish Sheets (Spain, Latin America)
=SECUENCIA(filas; [columnas]; [inicio]; [incremento])
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| rows | How many rows. |
| columnsoptional | How many columns; 1 by default. |
| startoptional | The first number; 1 by default. |
| stepoptional | The step; 1 by default. |
Example
SEQUENCE(rows) generates the numbers 1, 2, 3… downward. Combined with COUNTA, it numbers a list that grows by itself: add a name and its number appears.
=SEQUENCE(COUNTA(B2:B9))
Common mistake
With COUNTA as the row count, the numbering grows by itself as you add data.

In A2, number the salespeople from 1 up with a single formula that counts how many there are in B2:B9.
| A | B | C | D | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | No. | Salesperson | Sales | |
| 2 | Carmen | 48200 | ||
| 3 | Jorge | 35900 | ||

| 6 | Paola | 52300 | ||
| 7 | Ricardo | 44100 | ||
| 8 | Elena | 38650 | ||
| 9 | Mateo | 57900 | ||
| 10 |
The dotted outline shows how far the result should spill.
Frequently asked questions
- What is SEQUENCE called in Spanish?
- In Spanish Google Sheets it is SECUENCIA. The formula =SEQUENCE(COUNTA(B2:B9)) is written =SECUENCIA(CONTARA(B2:B9)) (or with commas under a Mexico locale).
- Why does SEQUENCE use semicolons in some spreadsheets?
- It depends on each spreadsheet's locale, under File > Settings. Where the comma is the decimal mark (Spain, much of South America), arguments are separated by semicolons. Mexico and United States locales use commas.
- What is the most common SEQUENCE mistake?
- With COUNTA as the row count, the numbering grows by itself as you add data.
