Google Sheets PMT function
Calculates a loan’s fixed payment. In Spanish Sheets it is called PAGO.
Syntax
English Sheets
=PMT(rate, number_of_periods, present_value, [future_value])
Spanish Sheets (Mexico locale)
=PAGO(tipo, número_de_períodos, valor_actual, [valor_futuro])
Spanish Sheets (Spain, Latin America)
=PAGO(tipo; número_de_períodos; valor_actual; [valor_futuro])
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| rate | The rate per period (annual/12 for monthly payments). |
| number_of_periods | How many payments. |
| present_value | The loan amount. |
| future_valueoptional | What should remain at the end; 0 by default. |
Example
PMT(rate, number_of_periods, present_value) calculates a loan’s fixed payment. If you pay monthly, the rate and periods must be monthly: annual rate/12 and years×12. Sheets returns the payment as negative (money going out); make the amount negative to see it positive.
=PMT(B2/12,B3*12,-B1)
Common mistake
It returns a negative number because it is money going out; make the amount negative to see it positive. Rate and periods must use the same unit.

- Why does PMT use semicolons in some spreadsheets?
