Google Sheets RATE function
Returns the interest rate per period of a loan or installment purchase. In Spanish Sheets it is called TASA.
Syntax
English Sheets
=RATE(number_of_periods, payment_per_period, present_value)
Spanish Sheets (Mexico locale)
=TASA(número_de_períodos, pago_por_período, valor_actual)
Spanish Sheets (Spain, Latin America)
=TASA(número_de_períodos; pago_por_período; valor_actual)
| Argument | What it is |
|---|---|
| number_of_periods | How many payments. |
| payment_per_period | The payment, as a negative. |
| present_value | The amount you receive. |
Example
"12 payments of 1150" sounds fine, but what interest are you paying? RATE(number_of_periods, payment_per_period, present_value) returns the rate per period. Multiply it by 12 for the annual rate.
=RATE(B2,-B3,B1)
Common mistake
With monthly payments the result is monthly: multiply by 12 for the annual rate. Matching signs give #NUM!.
